Editor's Notebook: Fireworks show in jeopardy
The national recession is putting Porterville’s annual Fourth of July community fireworks show at risk.
The show, coordinated by the Exchange Club of Porterville, is offered free of charge each year at the Porterville College stadium, with donations accepted from those attending.
This year the club is feeling an economic pinch, with only half the required money needed to order fireworks on hand — and the deadline for placing the order looming.
Exchange Club spokesman Felipe Martinez said the club has given him until mid-March to come up with at least $5,000 so the club can make the 50-percent down payment on the fireworks when they’re ordered.
The remaining $10,000 is payable when the fireworks are delivered in advance of the July Fourth fireworks show.
Club members are asking for the community’s help to keep the 40-year- tradition alive.
Even in bad times, most of us can come up with small donations to support worthwhile causes. For example, if everyone who went to last year’s fireworks show can kick in $5 to support this year’s show, the club will be well on its way to covering the required down payment.
If you attend the show regularly, you might want to consider a larger donation — say $10 or $20.
Larger donations, from individuals, community clubs and organizations, and area businesses will also be happily accepted.
We’ll publish the names of those making donations in The Recorder — as a way of thanking you for supporting this patriotic community event. Donors may also remain anonymous.
You can bring your donations to The Recorder, 115 E. Oak Ave., during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Make checks payable to the Exchange Club of Porterville, and put “Fireworks Display” in the memo line. We’ll get your money to the club.
