For the sake of the bullies

Editor,
I am writing this in response to the many Letters to the Editor about pit bulls.

It saddens me to read and hear about the overwhelming amount of people who have hate and dislike toward this loving breed, I own a 2-year-old nuetered pit bull or should I say the proper name for him staffordshire pit bull terrier. He came to me as a stray. Someone had carelessly tied him to a nearby fence and left him. Not knowing his past or how he was raised, I couldn’t leave him there alone, So I took him in and I have had him for a little over a year now. He is a super, awesome family dog. He gets along great with other dogs, kids and cats. He knows all his commands and loves to get lots of attention.

The thought of him ever turning on me or anyone else in that matter would never cross my mind due to his breed.

I have many years experience volunteering, rescuing, and fostering in local animal shelters; therefore I believe I have seen it all, lots of different breeds. In my own opinion; I believe that animals are just like humans, having their own personality and to say they should be banned for what some of the dogs in this breed have done is wrong.

In the human race when you have children it’s up to you how you raise them. They can’t do everything themselves. The same applies with dogs. The owner must train them right for them to always do right.

Porterville unfortunately has a huge problem. This whole county does. We have no laws truly enforced to those who abuse these breeds and over breed them for the wrong purposes. It’s always the dogs that suffer.

Pit bulls were not created for fighting. They were bred from overseas because of their personality and loyalty to families. So they were bred for being a family dog.

Also you don’t ever read up on or see what animal control officers deal with, the bite reports are always full; and not from just pit bulls, but all breeds. Small dogs are a huge bite problem they just aren’t as big so they don’t seem such a threat.

So what I ask is wake up people and do your research so you just don’t throw out your thoughts without the true facts. Don’t ban or hate this breed, let’s come together as a community to unite and make the proper steps to help protect this breed from being abused in fighting or cruel aggressive ways.
