Three area students named Youth of the Year at TKHCC dinner
A 2011 Monache High graduate and two Lindsay Unified students, one current and one who graduated in 2011, were honored with the Youth Achievement Award at the Tulare Kings Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 18th Annual Installation of Officers and Business Awards dinner Nov. 19 in Visalia.
Marcos Rodriguez, a 2011 graduate of Monache High School currently attending Harvard University, is the son of two migrant farm workers, Manuel and Erminia Rodriguez, who came to the United States in 1995 when he was only 2 years old, and brother to Jorge, Estevan and Marina Rodriguez.
Nestor Varela, a junior at Lindsay High School was honored for outstanding athletic ability. A member of the McDermont Boxing Club, Varela competed in the Junior Olympics in Mobile, Alabama over the summer, bringing home a silver medal in his division. Varela hopes to compete at the State Finals and go for a tional title in USA Boxing some day. Varela is the son of Nestor Varela Sr., one of his coaches at the boxing club.
The third youth, Gate Millennium Scholar and Dell Scholar Award recipient Dulce Diaz, graduated from Lindsay High School in 2011 and is a current student at UCLA, majoring in psychology. She is the daughter of Arturo and Bertha Diaz and sister to Angel Diaz and Arturo Diaz.
