New year, new hope

My View

The Porterville Recorder

Another year has zoomed by and it’s now 2012. I always start out each new year with so much hope. It’s time to wipe out the disappointments of the past year and begin with new opportunities.

I don’t make resolutions because I never keep them.

Resolution is defined as “the act of resolving”, “the action of solving”, “the quality of being resolute” and “a formal statement expressing the opinion, will or intent of a body of persons”. I have lots of I’m going to try to do this and that betters — watch my spending, lose weight, exercise, be nicer to people — wait, I guess those are resolutions.

Is not making resolutions a resolution? I resolve to stop thinking about it!

I hope that 2012 will be better economically. I am an optimist. I refuse to think that America won’t pull out of the current downward spiral. And no, a president or political party/movement isn’t going to make the difference.

We are the difference! We must go forward one step at a time and make things better for ourselves. And it doesn’t hurt to help someone out when they cross your path. It will make you feel better and will definitely make them feel better.

I’m totally guilty of waiting for the government to find a solution. Does that mean I might have to work harder to put some money away — yes. Does it mean I might have to give up a few things to make ends meet — yes it does. Does that make me happy — no — but again I’m an optimist so I believe that hard times will lead to good times, the sooner the better!

I hope for a cure for cancer. So many people are dying from this awful disease. Our scientists are getting closer and closer. Maybe this year they discover it.

I hope for civility in our government leaders and in ourselves. It’s so much easier to “mouth off” at someone who doesn’t agree with you or does something to make you mad. Let’s resolve to take a couple of seconds before we speak. Maybe then we won’t make fools of ourselves.

I hope that people see the beauty around them. The beating wings of a hummingbird drinking from a flower, the way light dances on a river or lake, the sweetness of two kittens playing — there’s beauty everywhere if you take a moment to see it.

And most of all I hope that God’s peace cuts through your darkness and gives hope to all who seek it. God bless you all in 2012.
