Repeal city Prop 8 support resolution

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Thirty-four years ago the medical and mental health communities affirmed the fact that homosexuality is not a disease or perversion, but a normal variation, such as red hair or left-handedness. Research also indicates that orientation is biologically based, is not chosen, and attempts to change are generally unsuccessful and can be dangerous.

We can control our actions, not our orientation, and acting contrary to nature can harm others. Unfortunately, we medical and mental health professionals have not done a good job of educating the public.

The Porterville City Council’s vote to support Proposition 8 last fall is an example of how public misperceptions can harm society. By preventing the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) individuals from marrying the person of their choice, Proposition 8 has infringed on their human rights and encouraged them to live lives of deception.

The increased rate of suicide, substance abuse and mental health problems in the LGBT community has been shown to be related to lack of acceptance by family and society.

The state has an interest in the health and well-being of its citizens, and Proposition 8 has harmed families by damaging self-esteem and denying the protections of civil marriage.

It should be repealed, and the Porterville City Council should withdraw their support of enshrining discrimination in our state constitution.
