Editor's Notebook: Tell us your stories

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is fast-approaching. Here at The Recorder, we’re working to put something special together to honor the man, but to also acknowledge how far our society has come since the Civil Rights Movement began.

To do that, we need your help.

If you have a story to share that touches on the Civil Rights Movement, let us know. If you have photos to document your experiences, we’d like to see them. If you know someone with a compelling perspective on the times, please let us know who they are and how to reach them.

We’re living in historic times. The Rev. King helped lay the foundation of societal change that on Nov. 4 saw the election of the first African-American to the highest office in the land. It’s unfortunate that an assassin’s bullet deprived Dr. King of the opportunity to witness these historic times.

The timing of the holiday, falling as it does the day before President-elect Barack Obama is sworn into office, adds extra weight to this year’s recognition of Dr. King’s efforts and legacy. Please take a moment, collect your thoughts — and then drop me a line.

I can be reached at the telephone number and e-mail listed below. You can also stop by the office.
