Lindsay softball kicks off league with ‘W' on road

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

Now that preseason is behind them, the Cardinals are able to see what they’re really made of — and Friday’s East Sequoia League-opening 10-3 victory at a tough Woodlake team was a good start.

Lindsay got quality pitching from Hayley Kendig and Sammy Jauregui, who combined for 11 strikeouts and allowed three walks.

Kendig earned the win pitching 4 2/3 innings, whiffing seven Tigers while allowing two earned runs.

Jauregui stayed calm depite entering late with bases loaded, preventing a Woodlake rally with a strikeout and a groundout at the bottom of the fifth inning.

Kelcey Knutson and Rachel Marie Ruiz each hit 3-of-4 from the plate. Knutson added two RBI and Ruiz touched home plate twice.

Second baseman Brittany Gutierrez hit 2-of-4 with three RBI as the Cardinals totaled 13 hits in all.

Defensively, Lindsay (7-2, 1-0 ESL) had just one error to its credit.

The Cardinals host Corcoran next Wednesday.
