Letter-To-The Editor: Ex POWs, widows due pensions

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

I wish to call attention to a little known benefit for veterans. An act of Congress in October 2004 states that ex-POWs or their widows will receive a pension if the veteran has heart disease or has died of heart disease.

This benefit pertains to any surviving POW from any war.

A copy of the veteran’s discharge papers, a copy of their marriage certificate and a copy of the deceased’s death certificate is required for the window to obtain compensation.

Medical benefits are also available for the widow (a supplement to Medicare, if a senior) through Champ, VA. There are also educational benefits for their children.

To receive an application and for further information contact: Department of Veterans Affairs, 1301 Clay St. Room 1300 North Oakland, CA.

Or, call their toll-free number 1 (800) 827-1000. Our brave men went through hell for their country and it is nice to know that our country is finally giving them the recognition they deserve.

For help in any way, don’t hesitate to call me, Ida Bonnar, veterans committee member of the Porterville Democratic Club at 784-5203.
