Yard sale people beware
Editor,
In August, my husband and I attended the Yard Sale at Sierra Self Storage in Porterville held by who I believe was Gary as this is the name we heard acquaintances refer to him as. We purchased an Oak wood roll-top desk that we paid for immediately. We purchased other items also.
When we were ready to leave we asked Gary if it was OK to leave the desk as we needed to go and get our truck, Gary said “OK but before you return I will probably sell the desk three more times and split the money with you,” at the time we took his response as a joke.
We ended up having to borrow a truck, and it took longer than expected. We returned and parked and noticed a couple in a truck getting ready to leave with our desk loaded on their truck. My husband approached them and explained that we had purchased the desk earlier.
The gentleman stated that he had just purchased the desk and paid the same amount we had. He stated if we had already bought it Gary could confirm this.
The couple backed up and waited as my husband went to speak to Gary. My husband told him that he had just re-sold our desk. Gary apologized and said that he had messed up.
What happened next shocked and infuriated us.
Gary took it upon himself to decide to return our money, even though we wanted the desk.
Gary went over to the couple saying he was not having them unload the desk and told them to go ahead and leave as he was returning our money. It appeared the couple were acquaintances of his and left with our desk.
We had no say in the situation whatsoever, we were very upset about the outcome — we were unprepared. I should have stayed with the desk and waited.
Yard sale people beware. Do not let this happen to you, most of all when someone says that they will re-sell merchandise that is literally no joke.
