February

The Porterville Recorder

You gotta love February. It’s got the fewest days so the month just zooms by and it has all sorts of holidays and events. The weather gets better and better as the month goes on. There’s usually a variety of cold and hot temperatures, rainy and clear days, although I’m not sure that’s happening this year.

Valentine’s Day is in February. I don’t have a valentine but I enjoy living vicariously through the loves of my co-workers. I’m just as excited as they are when the flower trucks deliver flowers or balloons. Candy is even better because they usually share. If any of you want to be my valentine, I’d love that — hint, hint.

The Farm Show is in February. It always rains for the Farm Show, so there is hope we will see some rain this month. Former President Bush will be there this year and Trace Adkins will perform. Sounds like a good time.

President’s Day is the 20th. The Recorder will be running our Match the President’s special pages again this year so some of you can expect to hear from me. We’ll be doing match the President to his pets. Some of them will surprise you. It seems sad that President’s Day has replaced honoring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. I know there are some schools that still observe the actual birthdays of Feb.12 and 22, but I wonder if they’re just out of school and don’t know why.

February is an emotional month for me. I lost my maternal grandparents and my father on different days and years and my parent’s anniversary was in February. My Dad’s birthday was Feb. 2 and it’s been 18 years since he passed away. I still miss him.

Enjoy the month as it zooms by. February brings the promise of spring and new life and hope abounds. I hope you embrace the good things in your life and can set aside the sad things.
