PC men and women fall
January 15, 2012 7:10 PM
The Porterville College men’s basketball team didn’t look like a team playing for second place in the Central Valley Conference in the first half. And while the Pirates came out with more of a “sense of urgency” as PC coach T.J. Jennings put it in the second half, it was too little, too late in a 60-47 loss to College of the Sequoias on Saturday at PC.
So it’s COS (12-7, 3-1) who moved ahead of PC into second in the CVC while the Pirates fell to 9-10 and 2-2 in conference.
“No sense of urgency,” said PC coach T.J. Jennings about his team’s play in the first half. “We have an opportunity to take second place in league and we didn’t do it. We need to play with a sense of urgency in everything we do.”
Porterville fell behind 31-17 at halftime as the style of the game was played to the Giants’ liking. COS was able to slow down the tempo of the game and prevent the Pirates from playing the up tempo style they like.
Because COS outrebounded PC 34-21, the Giants had numerous second chance shots that prevented PC from scoring in transition. Our No. 1 problem is rebounding,” Jennings said. “We as coaches have to do a better job to make sure we don’t have that problem in the future. If we can rebound, we can win.”
About his team’s transition game, Jennings also said, “it has to be on turnovers and rebounding.”
It looked like PC had got it going when it went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. Kameron Hoyt hit two three-pointers during the run, but those were the only two threes that Porterville hit in the half. PC was also plagued by poor shooting as it shot just 29 percent (13-for-45) for the game.
Delpreet Thind hit a three to begin the second half to bring PC to within 31-20 before COS went on to take a 38-22 lead. PC went on an 8-0 run with Mikey Hidalgo hitting two threes during the spurt to pull Porterville to within 38-30. But PC would get no closer than seven points in the second half.
Hidalgo scored 16 points, Hoyt had nine points and Jason Carmichael added eight points for PC.
MERCED 59, PC WOMEN 51
Porterville (5-13, 0-2) gave CVC power Merced all it could handle before falling. Eva Gutierrez hit a three for PC to tie the game 48-48, but Merced went on a 6-0 run to take a 54-48 lead. Gutierrez then scored on a drive through the lane to pull Porterville to within 54-51 before Merced held on.
Much like PC’s men, the Pirate women were hurt on the boards and that was the difference. “We had a very good effort,” PC coach Dave Kavern said. “We couldn’t rebound the ball at clutch times. We were battling them until the end. We hung in there. We did some good things. We were competitive.”
Gutierrez and Janette Grado each scored 13 points and Regine Mecenario added 10 points for PC.
MONACHE BOYS 58, DELANO 53

Mark Pascual scored 20 points, Adam Kittrell and Daniel Hernandez each had 11 points, Elijah Olais had eight points and Andy McMullen added six points to lead Monache. “The team never gave up and our defense came through at the end,” Monache coach Gary Miller said. “It was a great win for us.”
MONACHE GIRLS 72, DELANO 41
