Plenty of honors for PC men

As expected the Porterville College men’s basketball team didn’t make the state playoffs when the seedings were announced on Monday. But the PC men still received numerous honors on the all-Central Valley Conference team as selected by the coaches.

It was no surprise that West Hills’ men received the 18th and last seed into the Northern California playoffs. West Hills will play No. 15 Sacramento City College in a play-in game. CVC champion Fresno City was the only other CVC team chosen for the playoffs and received the No. 5 seed.

It was still a successful season for PC’s men, which finished with its first winning record since 2001 at 14-13. Porterville also finished in a tie for second in the CVC with West Hills and College of the Sequoias at 7-5.

And PC received several honors on the all-CVC team led by Jason Carmichael and Mikey Hidalgo, who were both named to the all-CVC first team.

The coaches selected a first team and an honorable mention team and Porterville’s Donald Lee was an honorable mention choice. PC’s Kameron Hoyt was named to the all-defensive team and Monache graduate Miguel Perez was named to the all-freshmen team.

In addition, PC coach T.J. Jennings was slected as a co-coach of the year with Fresno’s Ed Madec and West Hills’ Mark Arce. Jennings is believed to be the first coach to be honored on the women’s and men’s side in the CVC. In 2009, he shared the “Coaching Staff of the Year Award” as an assistant and interim head coach for Reedley’s women.

On the women’s side, PC’s Regine Mecenario and Maribel Bravo were all-CVC second team choices while Porterville’s Katrina Goulbourne was an honorable mention choice. Granite Hills graduate Emily Fechner was named to the first team for COS.
