Letter-To-The Editor: Leave students ‘debt free'
Dear Editor,
There were several points made about Measure O during the debate that were not mentioned in Wednesday’s article.
There are no available water hook-ups or sewage disposal available from the Springville Public Utility District for such a project, because a moratorium has existed since the 1970s.
Staff layoffs have recently occurred at the school due to a lack of funds and five years of declining enrollment, and both sides agree that there is no money to pay for the added maintenance and food service staff needed for such a grand project ...
Uncertainty is the only thing certain about Measure O.
Bond interest rates, massive state and federal budget deficits in the trillions of dollars, 25 to 40 years of payback, residents on fixed incomes ... it is all a recipe for disaster.
If we really want to “Support Our Students,” we need to live within our means and pass along a debt free school instead of a school with maximum debt and interest payments that the kids will be paying into their own retirement years ...
The school board could have used the $1.6 million dollars from developer fees to matching funds and turn it into $3.2 million for essential projects to enhance our already beautiful campus. Instead, the spent it on this election and wasted the opportunity.
We have a fantastic record of producing the very best scholar athletes in the entire country because we have dedicated teachers, staff and involved parents.
Our children do not deserve to be saddled with this massive debt; rather, they deserve to get a good education and a debt free future. Let’s give them that.
Please vote no on Measure O on Tuesday.
Ron Matik
Springville
