The Wild West
Cowboys & Indians: For four days, the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo had two very interested spectators in Montana team ropers Ty St. Goddard and Ryle Whitford. They were front and center again during the Jan. 22 final round as they watched 11 other teams try to set the average mark to beat before they took their turn in the arena.
When they finally got the chance to rope again, they turned in a 6.5-second run that placed fourth in the round and easily carried them to the average victory over Kelsey Parchman and Justin Copp. After tying for third in the first round and placing second in the second round, St. Goddard and Whitford pocketed $10,336 each for their eventful trip to Denver.
“We were here watching every day,” St. Goddard said. “It was pretty tough watching everyone take a run at our time.”
The young cowboys — St. Goddard is 22 and Whitford turns 21 next Sunday — were raised on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning, Mont., and easily count the Denver victory as the biggest of their short careers. They had hoped to hit the rodeo circuit hard in 2012, and now there’s no doubt they’re capable of competing.

Duck Lips Vegetarian Lasagna
1 Box lasagna pasta, 1 Pound (16 ounces) nonfat mozzarella, 2 Pints nonfat ricotta cheese, ¼ Cup fat-free parmesan cheese, 2 Egg whites, 2 Tablespoons parsley flakes, 2 Cans tomato sauce, 1 Can Italian style cutup tomatoes, 1 Small can tomato paste, 3 Cloves garlic, 1 Yellow onion, 1 Green bell pepper, ½ Cup fresh basil, 1 Teaspoon dried oregano, 1 Teaspoon crushed thyme leaves, 1 Fresh bunch of spinach leaves. Chop up bell pepper, onion and garlic cloves, place in large pan on oven top. Try not to use any oil - a little water works great. Cook on medium to high heat until tender. Add tomatoes, paste, sauce and spices. (If you like it spicy, add a can of hot Snap-E-Tom®) Bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer for 45 minutes. Cheese Mix: Mix ricotta, parmesan, egg whites and parsley flakes. (Save a little parmesan cheese for the top when layers are finished.) Pour 1 cup of tomato sauce on bottom of large casserole dish. Layer noodles, cheese mixture, spinach and tomato sauce, then layer again. Place in oven at 325°- 350° for 30 minutes. Let cool before cutting or it will blob out. You can reheat in microwave. Then scarf guilt-free!

COYOTES OF THE WEEK
KINGSTON, Ontario — A jury on Sunday found an Afghan father, his wife and their son guilty of killing three teenage sisters and a co-wife in what the judge described as “cold-blooded, shameful murders” resulting from a “twisted concept of honor.” The jury took 15 hours to find Mohammad Shafia, 58; his wife Tooba Yahya, 42; and their son Hamed, 21, each guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in a case that shocked and riveted Canadians from coast to coast. Judge Robert Maranger said to the convicted, “It is difficult to conceive of a more despicable, more heinous crime ... the apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your completely twisted concept of honor ... that has absolutely no place in any civilized society.”
A former dentist in Massachusetts has pleaded guilty to Medicaid fraud for using paper clips instead of stainless steel posts in root canals. Michael Clair is scheduled to be sentenced next Monday after pleading guilty last week in New Bedford Superior Court to a variety of charges, including defrauding Medicaid of $130,000 assault and battery, illegally prescribing prescription drugs and witness intimidation.

COWBOYS & RANCHERS ADVISORY PANEL
A Sacramento County (Calif.) Superior Court judge rejected a lawsuit on Jan. 24 that challenged the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds board’s right to hold a PRCA rodeo. The plaintiffs, Citizens for Environmental Responsibility and Stop the Rodeo, had argued that the fair board, under the California Environmental Quality Act, should have conducted a review of potential impacts before approving the rodeo in Watsonville last spring. Judge Lloyd Connelly ruled that the rodeo did not represent a change from the 70-year-old fairgrounds’ historic practices
