McGinn continues strong play for Cal Lutheran
Mikey McGinn continued his outstanding season earlier this week, leading the Cal Luthern men’s golf team to the title at the Texas Lutheran University Concan Invitational on Tuesday.
It was the second straight year the Cal Lutheran, an NCAA Division III school, won the tournament, the first time on school history the Kingsmen have won an event in consecutive years. The title also helpedthe Kingsmen earn another first for the program as they have already won three major events in the same season this year. A third program first came with the title as the Kingsmen also won back-to-back titles for the first time. Cal Lutheran was coming off a win at the Master’s College Spring Invitational on March 4 and 5.
McGinn, a 2010 Porterville High graduate, came back from a shaky first first round to shoot a 73 in the second round. The 73 was the low score of the round. McGinn finished 13th overall at 13-over-par 157, finishing the tournament with an eagle and two birdies. He sank a 20-foot putt for an eagle on the 16th hole.
A shaky first day for Mikey McGinn was forgotten as the junior shot a day-low 73, to tie with individual tournament champion, Chance Cathey, the only golfer under par with a combined 143 (-1). “I felt more focused in today’s round because I knew we had to shoot good scores today to pull out the win,” said McGinn, a junior, about his second round. “I was also much more comfortable with my club selection because the wind was not swirling like it was yesterday.”
McGinn finished with four birdies and an eagle in the tournament. Cal Lutheran finished with a 36-over 612 to finish 13 strokes ahead of second place Texas Lutheran.
In addition, McGinn was named as Cal Lutheran’s Male Athlete of the Week for his performance at The Master’s event in which he sank an 8-foot birdie putt in the first hole of a sudden death playoff to win the individual title. McGinn finished with a 2-over 218 (73-70-75).
So far this season, McGinn has risen to 20th in the national Division III individual rankings.
