A big win for PC volleyball
If it wasn’t the biggest win ever for the Porterville College women’s volleyball program, it was certainly one of the biggest. PC upset traditional state power Cabrillo 25-23, 10-25, 9-25, 25-20, 15-11 on Saturday in a NoCal Crossover Tournament at American River.

Porterville entered last week at 6-1, ranked No. 7 in Northern California and No. 20 in the state and ended up going 1-3 with all three losses coming to ranked teams. American River was ranked ninth in the state and fourth in NorCal while Cabrillo was ranked 16th in the state and sixth in NorCal. Porterville finished its preseason at 7-4, with all four losses coming against ranked teams and three wins coming against ranked teams. “I think we had an excellent preseason,” PC coach Dale Henderson said.
Against Cabrillo, Nayeli Colunga had 12 kills, six digs and one block, Amanda Monge and Allison Clem both had 10 kills, Sam Sawyer had 35 assists and Kacey Markarian added seven digs. “That was a major upset right there,” said Henderson about beating Cabrillo. “We weren’t expected to win.”
