BASKETBALL
PC MEN 76, REEDLEY 68
The Porterville College men’s basketball team buried 14 3-pointers at home to defeat Reedley 76-68 on Wednesday night.
With the win the Pirates evened their overall mark at 13-13 and can finish above .500 for the first time since 2001 with a win at home over bottom-dwelling Merced on Saturday night.
“I’m just happy to get the win and have the chance to finish the season over .500,” said third-year PC coach T.J. Jennings after the game while being interviewed on www.ValleySportsLive.com.
Porterville fell behind 4-0 but back-to-back treys from Anthony Hidalgo and Kameron Hoyt started a 10-0 PC run to give the Pirates a lead they would not relinquish.
Later in the first half, Hoyt and Hildalgo went back-to-back again from beyond the 3-point arc to push the lead to 25-15.
Reedley cut into a 41-30 halftime advantage with four straight points from Kris Collins early in the second half.
Hidalgo, who scored a team-high 18 points for the Pirates, ignited an 18-0 second-half run with his third trey of the night. John Pavelzik came off the bench, drained a 3-pointer to cap the run and give PC its largest lead of the night 62-36.
Jason Carmichael added three 3-pointers in the second half to finish with 17 points. Hoyt added 13 points. Pavelzik hit two more treys to finish with nine points. Eight Pirates scored on the night.
Collins led all scorers with 33 points, including 22 in the second half. He also had six of the Tigers’ 9 treys.
FRESNO 102, PC WOMEN 49
PC actually did a solid job of breaking Fresno City’s full-court pressure in the first half, but PC coach Dave Kavern said his team left as many as 23 points on the board due to missed layups and missed free throws.
Regine Mecenario scored 12 points, Janette Garado had nine points, Katrina Goulbourne had eight points and nine rebounds, Danielle Carrillo had eight points and Maribel Bravo added six assists for Porterville.
